By Dave Graybill

I like to visit the viewing window in the fish ladder at Rocky Reach Dam this time of year. Usually, there are scads of big summer run Chinook and sockeye passing through here, and you can get a look at them. When I entered the viewing room it was full of folks that wanted to see one of these salmon. I found a space at one of the windows and fired up my iPhone to get a shot. Then I waited and waited and the only thing I saw was a pike minnow. Finally, I saw a sockeye go by, and not long after a big king. Heck, not the usual numbers I am used to seeing here. On the way back I got a call from Chad Jackson, the Fish Manager for Region 2. He knew I was watching the sockeye numbers closely and he wanted to tell me that there was going to be a meeting on Wednesday morning with the Columbia River managers in Washington and Oregon. He anticipated the result of the meeting would be the closure of the sockeye fishing on the entire Columbia River. Check my report on Thursday and to see what was decided.
