A lake I like to visit this time of year is Billy Clapp, which isn’t too far from Soap Lake. I fish this lake in the winter and early spring for rainbow trout, and this is when I try for walleye. I am planning a trip to Billy Clapp to see if the walleye are biting at the very upper end of the lake. This is where Summer Falls pours into the lake, and the current can be fierce. My fishing buddy James Lebow manages to keep us over the deep hole, where the walleye are hanging out, and we often catch a bunch of them. We use bottom bouncers and spinners and often lose a few rigs on the snaggy bottom. There are times when juvenile walleye are packed in here and we release almost everything we catch. There is a point below this spot where we can get out of the current and it has produced some larger fish over the years. Another species that Billy Clapp is known for is smallmouth bass, and I have talked to James into spending some time fishing for them on our next trip. I’ll let you know how we do.
