As promised, I got an update on the plans for the sockeye season on the Columbia River. Chad Jackson, Fish Manager for Region 2, gave me a thumbnail sketch of the result of the meeting with Washington and Oregon Columbia River fish managers. Starting in the upper Columbia, it is closed above Priest Rapids Dam. There is the possibility of a season on Lake Wenatchee, as it is a separate run. It is still too early to make a guess on that. The Hanford Reach of the Columbia will also be closed on Saturday to sockeye retention. This includes the river from the 395 Bridge to the Astoria Bridge. In spite of the efforts of Washington representatives to discourage it, there will be an area on the lower Columbia that will remain open to sockeye fishing from June 27th to July 5th. The adjusted forecast for sockeye entering the Columbia River is now at 86,000, with the possibility of it being high as 116,000. The return could be as low as 53,000. The official news release is due to be out Thursday afternoon, so look for the E-Reg for all the actual details on this closure.
