The Blackbird Island Juvenile Fishing Pond has been a favorite place to visit for local youngsters and visitors to Leavenworth for many years. Last winter’s windstorm and flood did terrible damage to the pond and pumphouse that feeds water from the Wenatchee River into it. The local chapter of Trout Unlimited dedicated years of work and funds to keep the pond going, but they needed help from the local community to get the pond in good enough condition to give youth the opportunity to fish here again. The call for help went out and they got an incredible response. Heavy equipment, operators and time was donated. Work parties organized and the clean up and repairs moved ahead with enthusiasm. Trent Jackon has ramrodded much of the project and a recent update from him indicates that the pump house has been repaired, thanks to the Wenatchee River Institute. The debris has been cleared out, and the project has received over $12,000 to help with the work. Stein restaurant had a special night for fundraising, too. What a great gesture of support for this place where youth can start their fishing lives and memories. Hopefully, kids will be fishing here soon!
