I have plans to hit the road and see what conditions are like at a couple of some of my favorite fishing spots in the region. My first stop will be at Rocky Ford Creek, which is between Ephrata and Soap Lake. This stream offers fly fishers a place to cast for big rainbow throughout the winter months, as it is spring fed and doesn’t freeze. It is regularly stocked with rainbow trout and hooking one that could weigh 3 pounds, or more is a real possibility. I like to cast a Scud under an indicator or a Mini Leech with an Ultra Scud about 15 inches behind it. I let the indicator drift and watch for a tug. I strip in the Mini Leech and Ultra Scud. Sometimes the trout hit the Mini Leech and sometimes they hit the Ultra Scud. My next stop will be at Billy Clapp Lake, which is about 16 miles from Soap Lake. As the lake level drops more and more beach is exposed and anglers fish from the shore at the boat launch access. Rainbow range in size from about 15 inches to weighing 4 or 5 pounds in the winter. Boaters even launch from the sandy beach and troll.
