By Dave Graybill

Happy Holidays everyone! I recently visited several popular winter fishing destinations, and one of them was Billy Clapp Lake. It is located about 16 miles from Soap Lake off Highway 28. The lake is known for good fishing for rainbow, walleye and smallmouth bass. In some years we have also caught some big kokanee here. In the winter the lake is drawn down and there is a large stretch of beach below the boat launch site that anglers fish from in the winter months. It isn’t unusual to see several groups and individuals lined up along this shore casting their favorite baits to attract strikes from cruising rainbow. The rainbow range in size from about 15 inches to 2 or 3 pounds, and I have seen photos of fish much larger than that. Boaters will also launch from the sandy beach here and troll. This is possible with small boats and four wheel drive is recommended. I have enjoyed a few winter days trolling with crank baits, like Rapalas and have had good success. We usually just flat line these lures behind the boat, sometimes on side planers. I did a video on this last year, and you can view it on the Dave Graybill YouTube channel.
