By Dave Graybill

I have wanted to get up to the net pens on Rufus Woods for a while, and my intrepid fishing friends James Lebow and Ryan Harris agreed to meet me in Grand Coulee. James even brought his boat, so we would have a better chance of catching fish than from the shore at the middle net pens launch site. One thing we didn’t expect was the very heavy current. Earlier this fall we were complaining about the lack of current, and now we had trouble getting our baits to the bottom. We tried fishing inside, between the pens and the shore and James got a small fish. The current slacked off a bit, and we moved to the bottom end of the pens and I got two. One was about 3 pounds. We did notice a boat fishing at the bottom edge of the Nespelem Bar land a fish or two. Fishing was slow, mainly due to the high current, but fishing here is still worth giving a try. My buddy, guide Austin Moser, reported a tough day, too, but got one triploid that weighed 18 pounds! Boy, I would like getting one of those.
