The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Statewide Trout Derby is celebrating its 10th anniversary this season. I don’t know if Larry Phillips, who came up with the idea, would know how popular this turned out to be and how long it was going to last. If you aren’t familiar with the derby, the department plants tagged trout in lakes throughout the state. If an angler catches one, it is worth a prize. This year the tags are orange in color. When you catch a trout with this tag go to the Trout Derby page on the department’s website and fill out the form with the tag number, the lake you caught it in, the date and your contact details. The department will let you know which business to go to and claim your prize. You can find a list of the lakes that had tagged trout released into them, and it’s a long list of lakes in Eastern Washington. To see the list, log onto the WDFW website and put Trout Derby in the Search window at the top right of the home page. This year there are over 800 prizes valued at over $40,000!
