I made a note to myself this fall to mark my calendar to arrange a trip to Idaho’s Lake Pend Oreille in November. This is the time of year that many people have said is the best time to fish for the big trout that inhabit the lake. Kamloops rainbow that frequently exceed 20 pounds are caught this time of year. I had the opportunity to get out on Pend Oreille a couple of times. The first one was last August when I was on the shakedown cruise in the new Mark’s Marine Thunder Jet Luxor. I just has a glimpse of the bottom end of the lake, and it whetted my appetite for a return. I did that in September with Tony Johnson and his buddy John. We launched his Thunder Jet at the Farragut park boat ramp and headed across the lake. He then piloted the boat to several landmarks, like Whiskey Rock and Maiden Rock, that took us miles up the lake. That gave me perspective on just how huge this lake is. I am working on setting something up to try and catch one the Pend Oreille monster trout and I’ll let you know how I do.
