For years the Icicle Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited has been taking care of a special place in Leavenworth. Blackbird Island Pond is a Juvenile Pond and kids under the age of 15 have been able to walk or ride their bikes down to the pond and fish for trout stocked by the Department of Fish and Wildlife. I watch these kids go by home above Blackbird Island and have always thought it was great that kids had a safe place to go in town to catch a trout. There was a pump system to keep the water in the pond cooled and oxygenated by an intake from the Wenatchee River. However, the pumps have failed and need to be repaired or replaced. Trout just won’t survive in the pond without the flow from the river. Trout Unlimited needs to raise funds to get one pump running and hopefully both replaced. There just aren’t many places like this that kids can go these days, and it would be shame to lose it. If you would like to help with a donation to the local Trout Unlimited chapter, you can contact Mike Wyant, by calling 509-548-7747, or send him an email at cmwyant@charter.net.
