On Monday I posted the most recent news from the Department of Fish and Wildlife about the Chinook fisheries planned for the upper Columbia River. It’s great to have these “bubble fisheries” open for Chinook. This will allow those who need their Chinook fix an opportunity to get one. There was hope for these short openers early on, even with the dismal return of Chinook this year. It took some real number crunching to make it happen. Any way to get some additional opportunity was the goal. The next question on the salmon scene is the potential for an opening of a sockeye season on Lake Wenatchee. The folks at Tumwater Dam had an updated sign up on Monday afternoon. Last Friday the count was 11,574 and on Monday it was up to 13,566, and I think they are a few days behind on the video counts. I talked to one of the guys that was working there, and he said that on Monday at about midday they have already counted 1,500, so the fish are really pouring through right now. There’s a huge number of sockeye that are out in the Columbia and Wenatchee Rivers, too.
