By Dave Graybill

My brother Rick Graybill, our cousin Greg Preston and I have been fishing with Steve Goodfellow for over 50 years, and this year he invited us to join him on his boat in Alaska. We flew to Juneau and then took a float plane to meet him in Angoon. Within an hour of our landing, we were on the fishing grounds and in about five minutes we had our first coho on. After catching a bunch of coho we switched to halibut fishing and were hooking up as soon as our bait hit the bottom. We repeated this over the next four days, with breaks to catch live bait, and a couple of trips to a spot where Steve likes to fish for big halibut. My cousin Greg landed one that weighed about 70 pounds, and we caught some other “eaters” in the 20-pound class. I was told to pack for Alaska weather, which meant wet and windy conditions. However, we had sunny days almost every day of the trip, and the seas were flat calm. It was an epic trip, and I came home with two boxes of coho and halibut that I will be enjoying for quite a spell.
