When I was at a local sporting goods store recently one of my followers came up to say hi and to let me know that Buffalo Lake was an excellent place to catch big kokanee right now. He said that they caught two sizes on their trip. One group was made up of 11- to 13-inchers and the other kokanee they caught were 15 to 16 inches. I was very happy to learn this. My wife and I started fishing Buffalo Lake, which is on the Colville Reservation, not far from Grand Coulee many years ago. We have caught lots of kokanee, rainbow trout, largemouth bass and even some big triploids on the lake. Last year my friend Rollie Schmitten and I fished Buffalo for kokanee and had a great time. We also caught kokanee in the 15-to 16-inch range and limited pretty quickly. In spite of the really great fishing the lake offers it gets very little pressure. I suppose one of the reasons is that because it’s on the reservation an Access Permit, Launch Permit, and Tribal License is required. I typically fish on the reservations several times a year: at Omak Lake, Buffalo Lake and Rufus Woods Reservoir. I find the fishing so good that I usually pay for these fees on an annual basis.
