Every year, the Lake Roosevelt fisheries managers - Colville Tribes, Spokane Tribe, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW), and the Lake Roosevelt Volunteer Net Pen Program collaborate to stock up to 750,000 triploid rainbow trout into Lake Roosevelt. Triploids are sterile, meaning they cannot reproduce. This is an important conservation strategy to protect the wild Redband Trout stocks. All hatchery rainbow trout are adipose fin clipped to ensure anglers can distinguish between hatchery and wild trout. The fisheries management team uses 63 net pens located throughout the reservoir. The Spokane Tribal Hatchery, Colville Tribal Trout Hatchery, the WDFW’s Ford and Sherman Creek Hatcheries all contribute to this annual goal. This spring, 735,000 rainbow trout at 7-9 inches were released from 63 net pens throughout the reservoir. The Spokane Arm of the river received an additional 60,000 fish measuring 15 or more inches. This BPA funded program has been done cooperatively between the co-managers for over 25 years. It is now a destination fishery for rainbow trout. Lake Roosevelt is visited by more than 1.1 million people a year, and the hatchery rainbow trout fishery brings approximately $2.8 million of economic activity to local communities.
