It had been a while since I stopped by the takeout on the Wenatchee River to see if anyone was catching any spring Chinook on the Icicle. There was an angler loading up to leave and visited with him. He said he didn’t get a bite but saw more fish that morning than any other trip this season. He anchored near The Steps and with his flashlight could see a dozen fish from his boat. They weren’t biting, so he moved down to the Stroup Hole. After fishing here for an hour, he rowed back up to The Steps only to find another boat in the hole by then. He was also amazed at how few boats were on the river. There were only three drift boats fishing the Icicle—on a Saturday! It was a mystery why there were so few anglers out there, as it was a nice sunny day. There’s about a difference of 8,000 fish that have passed over Rock Island Dam and Rocky Reach, so there should be plenty of fish in the river. Fish have their own ideas about when they are going to bite. That’s okay, there’s still lots of days left in the season.
