By Dave Graybill

Anglers most often see me running to a fishing area on one of the lakes or rivers in our area in the Bob Feil Boats Motors Smoker Craft Phantom with the 250 Mercury or trolling with the Minn Kota. When the snow flies and the boat is tucked away for the winter I will often be fishing from shore at one of the many lakes and rivers that offer good fishing through the chilly months of the year. Believe it or not, this is when I also break out my fly rod. I like to catch big rainbow with this rod and the best place to do this in the winter is at Rocky Ford Creek, near Ephrata. This mile-long stretch of running water is always ice free in the winter, and there are some very big rainbow in this stream. I have some places that I like to cast from, and I use two methods to attract a strike. One is with an indicator and a Scud. The other method is to cast an olive mini Leech with an Ultra Scud about 15 inches below it. Unlike watching my slowing drifting indicator, I cast and strip the Leech and Scud setup.
