I have heard of a new development in fishing at Lake Chelan. Maybe it’s not all that new to locals in the area, but trout fishing in the lower basin has been good enough to get my attention. Last spring I learned that smallmouth bass anglers were getting good numbers of rainbow of over 20 inches while casting crank baits. This fall the same thing is happening. In fact during a local club outing on Chelan, more rainbow were caught than smallmouth. I was in Chelan recently and saw an angler fishing off the dock at Mill Bay, and when he came in I asked him what he was up to. He told me that last year at this time he was catching very good numbers of big rainbow right off the dock here. I also noticed smaller rainbow feeding on a hatch right in the bay there. The fishing on Chelan can be a great experience in the fall. The weather can be clear and calm and now there is something worth chasing in addition to the lake trout. I am going to give this a try and let you know what I learn, very soon. This may be a new wrinkle in what’s available on the Lake Chelan.
