By Eric Granstrom

For FishingMagician.com, I'm Eric Granstrom. I must have been 10. Dad, for the umpteenth time would be in Alaska come Father's Day. I made Mom take me down to Goss-88 to find just the right thing. I spent hours making it perfect while perched over a TV-tray in our living room. The bull elk began to take shape as I obeyed the instructions of which numbered paint to use on each section. Finally it was done. I asked Mom to send it to Dad in time for Father's Day. She said she didn't know if he'd be back in camp to get it. Dad was once again toiling the waters of Bristol Bay, Alaska on his gillnet boat trying to cash in on runs of King Salmon and Sockeye. She mailed it and I impatiently waited for the call that he'd received it. Finally, the call came in. He was thrilled. I was at Dad's house recently and spied the very paint-by-numbers elk I'd painted 40-years ago hanging with pride next to other framed photos of elk-hunts through the years. I couldn't believe it. He'd kept it all these years! This Father's Day I thank him for the gift of the great outdoors. Until next time, Good Fishing!
