Fishing for sockeye on Lake Wenatchee can be a challenge. When my brother Rick asked me how I did on Saturday, I told him it was windy and wild. My last two trips were done in a very stiff breeze. A steady 12 to 16 miles per hour with gusts well over that. I had my bow mount down running fast enough to keep the bow straight, and even with that I used my kicker to keep the stern into the wind when going with it. I also had my kicker in reverse much of the time, when going downwind, to keep my speed down. It worked. My fishing partners on Saturday, Bill Westerbrook and Lyndon McClean, did a great job helping me manage my gear, crank in fish and whack ‘em. We were on the water by about 6:30 and had nine sockeye in the cooler by 8:00. We had triples, doubles—that was the wild part of the day. When we needed just one more we got a double and had to release one. By nine o’clock we were headed for the dock. We all took home bags of great looking fillets, and I am eager to get back out there.
