This is the last weekend that anglers can fish many of the lakes in our region. These lakes open on the fourth Saturday in April, and they close on October 31st each year. Some of these are the most popular in the state. Many anglers plan to fish these prior to their close as they offer some of the best fishing of the year, particularly for carryover trout. Jameson Lake in Douglas County is a good example. For many years it closed in July and reopened for the month of October, and that’s when a lot of people would fish it, for big carryovers. Another reason to get out on these lakes before they close is that there are still some tagged trout in them. These fish are worth prizes awarded through the annual Trout Derby conducted by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. It just takes a few minutes to look through the Washington Sport Fishing Rule pamphlet to see if your favorite lake is included in the ones that close at the end of October. Although many lakes close this fall there are a whole bunch of really good lakes that are open year-round. Don’t put away the fishing gear just yet. We have some great weather in the fall and great fishing, too.
