By Dave Graybill

I traveled to upper Rufus Woods Reservoir to try my luck fishing from shore below the net pen there. This is such a popular spot that the WDFW and Colville Tribe partnered in the improvements that include two heated restrooms with showers, an RV park and camping area. Funding is in place to construct a boat ramp near here, too. Anglers don’t need a tribal permit to fish at this access and there is a good spot on the bank. I joined Mike McKee, Lloyd Woodard and Raul Anaya and we all were fishing slip sinker rigs with marshmallows and shrimp for bait. Mike was the only one of the dozen anglers fishing her to land a fish. It was a nice 18-inch rainbow. We decided to see if it was any better at Lake Roosevelt, and after checking out the water level at Spring Canyon we chose to set up at Crescent Bay, just above the dam. I got one small rainbow here, and it since it had an adipose fin, I released it. You must release unclipped rainbow on Lake Roosevelt to protect the wild red band rainbow in the lake. That was it for fishing on a beautiful winter day.
