By Eric Granstrom

For FishingMagician.com, I'm Eric Granstrom. Pride goeth before a fall. The original quote from the King James Bible is "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." It sprang to mind yesterday as I read an account of a fisherman who took his boys out fishing off the coast. As they were trolling along, he noticed the stern of his boat sitting a little low in the water. He picked up the floorboard only to see water sloshing around his inboard engine. The bilge pump had failed. This was the moment of the story where a lot of men might be too prideful to call for help. Which, too often can lead to disaster. Thankfully, this man called the Coast Guard as well as Sea Tow. He had his sons try to manually pump the bilge but that pump didn't work either. The engine conked out and he had his sons get in the bow to balance the boat. Just as help arrived, a wave came over the stern and swamped the boat. He and his sons are alive and well because he was smart and immediately called for help. Words to live by. Until next time, Good Fishing!
