By Dave Graybill

I had a meeting in Salem, Oregon on Tuesday so on Monday I made a stop at Vernita on my way down. Here I jumped on board Austin Moser’s boat with Mark Yuasa. Mark is the former writer for the Seattle Times and now runs the Northwest Salmon Series Derby for the Marina Trade Association. We zoomed up the river to a spot above the Power Line Hole, and Austin put out the rods. He was rigged to back troll eggs on divers, and that turned out to be a great plan. I had a nice 17-pound king in the box by 7:30, and then he proceeded to limit the boat. Mark and the two clients Austin had on board from Bend, Oregon all got nice kings. I would say that it is prime time to get to Vernita. There are still very good numbers of upriver brights coming over McNary Dam. The season is set to end on October 15th, so you had better get in gear. Austin still has a few seats available and if you want to put some kings in the freezer, I would give him a call.
