By Dave Graybill

The Fourth of July is coming up this week, and families are looking for some fun things to do, and Leavenworth is having their annual Kinderfest celebration on the fourth. One of the fun activities for kids is the annual Kids Free Fishing Day at the pond on Blackbird Island. This pond has been the focus of a lot of volunteer time and effort by the Icicle Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited. They have given this pond several make overs in past years, and just recently helped clear the shorelines to make access easier for those who come down to fish it for cutthroat trout. Every year on the 4th of July Trout Unlimited members invite families to come down and try their luck at fishing at the pond. This is designated as a Juvenile Pond, only so kids age 15 years and younger can fish here. The Department of Fish and Wildlife loads the pond with cutthroat trout, so fishing is excellent. Just show up with the kids from 9 a.m. till 3 p.m. and Trout Unlimited volunteers will be there to help you out. They will have rods and reels and bait, and even bags for your catch, and it’s free!
