My fishing buddy Brian Anantatmula and his son Josh were going to be fishing on Lake Chelan Tuesday and they invited me to come along. I met them at the boat ramp at Mill Bay at 7 a.m., and we headed up lake. We decided to look above the Yacht Club and ran just below Mitchell Creek to look for fish. There was one other boat up there and they were still looking for fish when we chatted with them. We did some more exploring and then ran back down and put the gear out just above the Yacht Club channel. Josh saw a rod bouncing, popped it off the rigger and reeled a kokanee. It was a pretty small fish, but we still celebrated. Not long after, the other downrigger rod got bit, and Josh landed our second fish of the day. It was a little bigger, but the kokanee are running smallish this season on Chelan. We fished here a while longer and then moved down the lake to Rocky Point. We tried fishing for kings for a while, but it wasn’t the best time of day. It was generally agreed that kokanee fishing on Lake Chelan is “spotty” right now.
