By Dave Graybill

The plan for last Thursday was to drive up to Conconully Lake and fish for kokanee and bass. I had received several reports that the kokanee fishing at Conconully was very good. I had never fished for kokanee at Conconully Lake and have wanted to get up there for years, but had never made it. I have fished for bass at Conconully Lake and found it to be loaded with small ones, but fun to catch. On Wednesday I got in touch with Keith Roe up in Omak. He told me I could save driving time by going to Alta Lake instead. They were catching kokanee at Alta and largemouth bass, too. I hadn’t fished Alta Lake since I was a youngster and was surprised to hear about kokanee and largemouth bass in there. It has always been a trout lake. Well, it is a kokanee lake now. My fishing partner Tom Verschueren and I got our limits of kokanee, that were mostly 12 to 14 inches, in under two hours of fishing. We then switched to bass fishing and had a great time catching largemouth of up to about 2 pounds. If you want to get in on the kokanee action at Alta Lake, and Conconully from what I hear, better do it quickly. The fish are maturing and will be in spawning mode very soon.
