By Eric Granstrom

For FishingMagician.com, I'm Eric Granstrom. Years ago when my Grandpa Ben was still alive, he was struck by the fishing bug. Here's a guy who spent his life as a commercial fisherman in Astoria and Bristol Bay, Alaska catching millions of pounds of salmon now addicted to fishing hook and line. He bought a boat and would launch in Warrenton, about 75-miles from his home in Forest Grove. He'd time it right and fish salmon on the incoming tides when available. But his real interest was fishing sturgeon. He would stay at what is now Kamper's West Kampground not far from Hammond Marina. He owned a fish market in Eugene for a number of years and was an expert at filleting fish. He'd hold a roundtable at the fish-cleaning station at the campground showing how to properly fillet sturgeon. He'd run a hook through a whole herring head and tie some half-hitches so the herring is head downstream from your weight. He loved fishing below the Astoria Bridge for sturgeon and would anchor on a buoy he could toss if need be to chase bigger fish. Of course, rules and limits have changed since then. Until next time, Good Fishing!
