Happy New Year everyone! I am really looking forward to 2020 and some great fishing. The weather has been mild so far this winter. This is good news for those who like to chase kokanee on Lake Chelan and Lake Roosevelt. However, those who like to fish for perch on Curlew Lake will have to wait a little longer to get after them. I checked in with the folks at Fishermen’s Cove Resort and they tell me that the ice that had formed is going fast. He had heard that there were a few anglers out on the ice near the State Park, but he sure wouldn’t advise it. Temperatures are only getting down to 30 in the evenings at Curlew, which is near the town of Republic. Nighttime temperatures need to be in the teens for a while to thicken the ice on Curlew. This has become one of the most popular winter lakes in the state due to the numbers of fat perch available through the winter, and anglers will need to be patient and let the ice get thick enough for safe ice fishing this season. I will keep an eye on conditions and let you know when Curlew ice fishing is a go.
