By Dave Graybill

I have been wondering if there was enough safe ice to be drilling holes in Moses Lake. It just so happened that James Lebow, one of my fishing buddies in Moses Lake, was on this way to see for himself when I called him. He has since sent me photos of people out on the frozen surface of Moses Lake, and even a shot of one of the big perch that Moses Lake produces every winter. He said that the fishing was really slow last weekend, but the ice is plenty thick. With the chilly weather forecast in the near future, it will likely get even thicker. This adds Moses Lake to the list of lakes that are worth a shot for ice fishing this winter. Fish Lake, near Lake Wenatchee, has been good for perch and trout for a few weeks now. Patterson Lake, near Winthrop is known for good perch, trout and even kokanee catches through the ice. Bonaparte Lake, northeast of Tonasket is another popular winter lake, offering a variety of fish that includes brook trout, kokanee and even big tiger trout. North of Republic is Curlew Lake which has a reputation as the best perch fishing anywhere in the state.
