By Dave Graybill

I finally got a chance to get up to Lake Chelan and try my luck for Chinook salmon. My brother Rick told me that the fishing for kings on the lake was the best he had seen in years. He and his friends were getting limits in the evenings. I hadn’t fished exclusively for kings on the lake for many years and was eager to give it a try. My brother in law Tom Verschuren and I made it to Chelan last Friday. We launched mid morning at the State Park and headed up lake from there while I put the rods out. I put one rod at 90 feet and the other at 60. I had size 0 chrome dodgers on each rod and 30-inch leaders tied with size 2/0 and 1 hooks. I had brined a dozen small herring the night before. We landed one cutthroat and lost five other herring. The bites may have been other cutthroat, but could have been kings. Finally at 3:30 I got a solid hit and knew it was a king. It headed for the surface and peeled off a bunch of line. Tom scooped it up with the net and we celebrated. Success!
