Kokanee fever is running high in Central Washington. There have been limits of kokanee taken from Lake Chelan already, and anglers are very eager for the tremendous fishing for giant kokanee to get in gear on Lake Roosevelt. My brother Rick Graybill and I made a trip to Lake Roosevelt to see if these prized fish were showing up in the lower portion of the lake. We knew that we were probably a little early to expect to find kokanee but we just had to see if we could find some. On Monday we launched the Smokercraft at Spring Canyon and headed directly to Swawilla Basin. This is one of the best known and productive areas on lower Roosevelt for big kokanee, so this is where we went to work. We ran side planers with a mix of attractors on the business end. There were Kokabow blades and their new squidder style spinners on two rods and Rick ran one of his favorite spinners and a jointed Rapala on the other two. We searched and searched for fish and whenever some appeared on the screen we got bites. We landed five fish—all rainbow. They were from 15 to 20 inches, but not what we were looking for. I share what happened on day two in my Friday report.
