My good friend Brian Neilson in Moses Lake is in between boats and really wanted to get his buddy Russ Shiraishi out fishing, so we took my boat for a trip on Potholes Reservoir. The morning was chilly and foggy, with the promise of a clear and sunny day. We got the clear sky and absolutely dead calm water. We agreed to blame the water conditions for the poor fishing we experienced. We marked walleye just about everywhere we went on the reservoir, but only got five bites that we were convinced were walleye. We hooked none. We got three catfish, which we hate, one nice crappie and a big bluegill. I checked with the best angler on Potholes—Shelby Ross—and he said he got 10 walleye, but only one after 10 a.m. We did see a good number of anglers catching crappie and bluegill near the habitat boxes to the west of the mouth of Crab Creek. So that’s the plan for the next trip. Start early for walleye and then switch to crappie and bluegill. That should be fun. I hope to get back down to Potholes soon and I will let you know the results.
