My original report for Wednesday was a reminder about the CCA and Brewster Salmon Derbies. Well, scratch that. The Columbia River will close to fishing for summer run salmon as of midnight on this Sunday. That means both the Pete Flohr Memorial Derby in Wenatchee and the Brewster King Salmon Derby are cancelled this year. The down grade of the projected return of summer salmon to our region did it. This is not just disappointing to all the sport anglers that enjoy this summer salmon season. This is major blow to the many guide services in our region. The summer run salmon season is probably their most important season of the year. The communities of Wenatchee, Entiat, Pateros and Brewster also reap economic rewards from the activity from the number of visitors that come here. I was happy to hear from the Brewster Salmon Derby organizers that WDFW regional staff worked hard to find a way to keep the season open. The good news is that the sockeye season remains open. I will have more details on what anglers can expect for the balance of the summer salmon season in my report on Friday. Stay tuned.
