By Dave Graybill

We have had many clear and sunny days, without any wind, in our region. I took advantage of one of them to try the shore fishing at Rufus Woods Reservoir. Tom Verschueren had never been to Brandts Landing and was willing to come along. Brandts Landing is a Federal Park located six miles up the road from the Corps of Engineers boat launch above Chief Joseph Dam. There are several good spots to access the shore here, some with picnic tables, and all have fireboxes. This would be an ideal place to take family and friends for an outing to catch the triploid rainbow trout that inhabit the reservoir. Most of the fish are provided by plants from the Colville Tribe, and others have made their way down from Lake Roosevelt. It is my favorite spot to fish from the shore on Rufus Woods. Tom and I set up our rod holders in the rocks at the shore, and rigged the rods. I put on 3/4-ounce egg sinkers above a swivel and a three-foot leader to a single size 2 hook. I baited the hooks with jarred shrimp and a piece of marshmallow large enough to float it off the bottom. We cast our baits as far as we could, let them sink and stood back to watch what would happen. What happened is that we had our two fish limits in less than an hour. Two of the fish were 17 or 18 inches and two were just 12 inchers that must have been recently planted. Since it was still so early we decided to run up to Lake Roosevelt and see if we could finish our daily limits up there. I will share what happened at Roosevelt in my next report.
