By Dave Graybill

Okay. My plan to catch big rainbow on Potholes Reservoir didn’t go the way I anticipated. Did I mention that when I trolled by the bank anglers on Medicare Beach they said they were catching fish? As it turned out I batted zero on the rainbow. We did catch a couple of very nice walleye. That 28-incher was the best one I have put in the boat all season. Now I have a different plan. I am going up to Rufus Woods. I have fished from shore here many times. I started going up there in the early 90s. I have fished at the upper net pens, all along the east shore above the dam, and from many of the shore fishing spots near the boat launch. I have even fished from the new public access just above the dam. I have had the best luck casting from shore at Brandts Landing. This is a Federal Park six miles above the dam on the east shore. There are several RV pads here, restrooms and fire pits. I pick a likely spot, set up a folding chair and settle in. On my hook I use a large enough piece of marshmallow to float my bait off the bottom. My favorite bait is stained coon shrimp, scented with Graybills Guide Formula. I use a slip sink to keep the line from swinging down stream and use a three to four foot leader. Well, here I go again. Maybe I will find some rainbow this time.
