By Dave Graybill

I had the great pleasure of taking Dr. Brian Anantatmula and his kids Josh, Avary and Brinely fishing last Friday. I have had many adventures with the Anantatmula family, fishing for steelhead, kokanee and salmon. This was our first time out on the water this year, and we were all eager to get a salmon, as we have done in the past. The plan was to start at Chelan Falls to try for a king and then run up over the hill the Lake Chelan to see if the kokanee were still around. The first part of our day went well. It took quite a while, but the rod on Brian’s side of the boat popped off the rigger and bent over with what had to be a good king streaming line off the reel. The fish took a few good runs and even jumped a couple of times next to the boat. I had a tough time getting the net under this rambunctious fish, but finally, after seeing it was a adipose fin-clipped keeper, I hoisted it into the boat. We all celebrated and got some photos with it and the whole clan. We made another couple of passed but decided the bite was definitely over and headed for Chelan. We searched for kokanee as far up lake as Mitchell Creek and didn’t find any schools of kokanee. We got one cutthroat and that was it. The fantastic kokanee fishing on Lake Chelan may be finally over. At least I couldn’t locate any schools. Oh well, next year!
