By Dave Graybill

After a very poor day of fishing at Bridgeport for king salmon, I wanted to go somewhere that I knew I could at least catch something. So I grabbed my fly rod and drove all the way up to the end of the Entiat Valley road to Cottonwood. I passed anglers who were trying for summer salmon in the lower Entiat along the way, and talked to a fish checker and one angler and both reported that fishing was tough. The salmon were there but they weren’t biting. When I got to Cottonwood I drove to the bottom end of the campground and entered the stream. This was new water to me and I was eager to see if this stretch would produce trout like the area I usually fish, which is just below here. Sure enough there were fish in here, and I caught some fat rainbow, cutthroat and brook trout. I started off with a rubber-legged Elk Hair Caddis, which worked okay, but when I switched to my trusty Parachute Adams I did much better. I worked my way down stream and the further I got the tougher the wading became. When I go up to the Entiat again I will go back to my favorite area, or try another spot further down.
