By Dave Graybill

My daughter Whitney was coming over for a visit, and she made a special request. A childhood friend, who now lived near Florence, Italy, was coming to Leavenworth, too. She had a six-year-old son with a passion for fishing. The boy was wild about fishing and talked about it all the time, but he had never caught a fish! I had them join my daughter and I at Blackbird Island Pond, near Enchantment Park in Leavenworth. Here there is a Juvenile Pond, that the local Trout Unlimited chapter had helped create with the assistance of Chelan County PUD. I put together a rod and reel, equipped with a bobber, and just happened to have a few nightcrawlers in my fridge. Fishing started off darn slow, but as we worked our way around the pond we saw some fish jumping and moved close to that area. After a few fruitless casts the bobber went down and young Vincenso landed his first trout. It was a beautiful cutthroat about 11 inches long. We fished a while longer and he landed two more fish. As we made our way back to the parking lot Vincenso stopped everyone on the path to show off his catch. It was a day we will both remember. Take a kid fishing! It’s blast!
