With each passing day, more and more spring Chinook are moving into the Icicle River, and the opportunity to catch one of these prized fish is improving. Not that people haven’t been catching them already, fishing has been pretty good actually. There have been some dandies taken, too, and that means to 25 pounds on this river. The very warm weather we’ve had has boosted the amount of water flowing in the Icicle and that means making some gear adjustments, especially for those who fish from the bank. These flows are the reason most anglers fish whole herring on the Icicle. They will hold up better in the current. There is a device called an Anchovy Special that will hold the bait, if you aren’t good at rigging a whole herring. In front of the herring a Spin n Glow is standard on the Icicle. Anglers may want to beef up their leaders, to at least 25 pounds when flows are this high. It will make a difference to have a stout rod and a quality reel with a good drag system on it for this fishery, too. Be sure your herring is of good quality and brine and brighten it the night before.
