Salmon fishing is increasingly on the minds of anglers here in Central Washington. They are already enjoying some of the best spring salmon fishing in years on the Icicle River. I talked to Shane Magnuson, of Upper Columbia Guide Services, and he has boated 72 fish in 20 days of fishing this season, which translates into excellent springer fishing for the Icicle. Anglers continue to boat kings on Lake Chelan, too. Joe Heilen, of Lake Chelan Adventures boated five kings on a half-day trip recently. This is all good, but most anglers are watching the fish counts, as the summer-run fish are making their way upstream. On Saturday, June 27th there is a day-long celebration of the coming season at Hooked on Toys in Wenatchee. Valley Marine from Yakima will be there with new and used boats on display, and there will be seminars on fishing for summer-runs presented by local guides. I will be there, too, and will be happy to answer questions on all types of fishing in our region. While everyone is waiting for the salmon to show up, word is that Rufus Woods is on fire again. As many as 35,000 fresh triploids are on the loose and anglers are having good success in catching them.
