By Dave Graybill

When I have a poor day of fishing, I just say I’m paying my dues. Well, I cashed in on a lot of dues paying last Sunday. I wanted to try the bass fishing at Conconully Lake. I figured that if it was slow I would move to Omak Lake for cutthroat. As it turned out I had the best day of largemouth bass fishing ever. I had Dave Eichler and his son Evan along. These guys are my “A” team when I want bass. They have all the gear, know how to cast and are a ton of fun in the boat. We had caught and released 30 fish before noon, so we decided to see if we could catch 50. We passed 50 and decided to see if we could catch 100. I finally said that we could stop at 150! When we hit that mark, Evan caught two more while we were putting the gear away. Imagine landing 152 fish from about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We probably missed or lost another 50 during the day, too. We fished a range of plastics, but also found crank baits to be very effective. There is a great public launch on the lake, and even a nice resort, if you wanted to stay for a couple of days. The weather was hot and sunny, and we only fished a fraction of the shoreline on Conconully Lake.
