By Dave Graybill

Summer-run salmon anglers are out in force on the upper Columbia River, and as usual success is mixed. Those who fish the river consistently, consistently catch fish, and those who don’t get a chance to be out there regularly are not getting many fish. I ran into Shane Magnuson at the ramp at Wells the other day, and he had taken a limit of four fish for his clients. I also visited with guide Don Huffman, and he also had a good day on the river. Huffman was kind enough to not only share where on the river he found fish, but also gave me his set up. This is going above and beyond in an effort to help out a fellow angler, and I really appreciated the gesture. I wish I could have taken full advantage of his expertise and kindness. I had Dennis Beich, of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, Linda Parlette, State Senator, and Rollie Schmitten, new Department of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner, on board and really wanted to catch a bunch of fish. Of course I didn’t. It seems that ever time you really want to show off the fish ignore you. That was the case on this day.
