By Dave Graybill

Summer-run salmon fishing is keeping a lot of anglers busy right now, but there are some other excellent fishing opportunities in our region through the summer months. Bass, walleye and spiny ray fishing can be terrific on many waters. One of my favorites is Evergreen Reservoir, near Quincy. This small reservoir gets little pressure and offers very good fishing for both smallmouth and largemouth bass in July. It has been the destination for my wife and me when we chose to stay close to home over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. I have had good luck casting a Texas-rigged, June Bug-colored worm along the shore, and have also caught a lot of fish on the smoke-peal, blue Senko. I did catch a tiger muskie there once, too, which adds a certain potential thrill to fishing at Evergreen that is found on few other waters of the state. This is also a great time to be fishing for smallmouth bass and walleye on Banks Lake and Lake Roosevelt. You can pretty much count on non-stop action for smallies this time of year, and the walleye bite can be very good on both of these big impoundments.
