The results are in from the big Budweiser Lowrance King Salmon Derby in Brewster, and not only did the fish catch blow by last year’s numbers, the amount of cash and prizes handed out did, too. There were 242 entries in this year’s derby and 129 boats hit the water Friday morning. These anglers turned in 137 fish to be weighed and registered, which is phenomenal for any salmon derby anywhere. Top fish in the adult class weighed 34.5 pounds and was taken by Hank Payne of Omak. The youth division was won by Walter Dawson of Brewster, and weighed 23. 6 pounds. Also in the money this year was Payton Oules, and she placed third in the youth division. She’ll be winning the adult class before we know it. The derby was supported by around 60 businesses this year, and between the raffles and the cash a total of over $22,000 was handed out to derby participants. The bite was hot, hot, hot, just like the weather. There were 50 fish caught on Friday; 54 on Saturday and 33 on Sunday. The average weight of fish turned in for the adult class was 28. 4 pounds. These are all great fish. I don’t know about you, but I’m headed for Brewster today, and buying my ticket for next year’s derby tomorrow.
