Anglers are in the grasp of sockeye mania right now, and the primary destination is Lake Wenatchee. This lake usually gets little or no attention from anglers, but when the sockeye season opens, as it has again this year, hordes of fishing boats line up to use the one launch to get at these fish. It will take longer to get the boat in the water than to catch a limit of these tasty salmon for many anglers, but the urge to join the fishing party on Lake Wenatchee is just too hard to resist. Sockeye are not large, most will average 3 or 4 pounds, but what they lack in size compared to their Chinook cousins they make up for in flavor. These fish are famous for their deep red flesh that makes the best possible table fare of all the species of salmon that return to our local waters. The tackle required to catch them is simple: a size 0 silver or white dodge, trailed by a 3/0 barbless red hook. That all that it takes to get them to hit, once you’ve found the right depth and speed. Be sure to have plenty of ice on board. These fish spoil easily.
