Summer run salmon fishing is still going great guns here in Central Washington. The fishing continues to be good even right in downtown Wenatchee and the bite at Wells Dam and at the mouth of the Okanogan Brewster is very, very good. Steelhead have stolen the headlines recently. The past record for the number of fish passing over Bonneville Dam was just over 14,000 fish. Last week a record 18,000 steelhead crossed over Bonneville. That was beaten soundly the following day when 34,000 steelhead made their way upstream on the Columbia River. The counts continued to be incredible for the next several days, and on the 18th of August finally dropped below the previous record when over 12,000 fish moved up the system. Wow. It appears that is going to be a banner year for steelheading for the main stem Columbia and most of its tributaries. Anglers here will be tracking these fish and they make their way upstream. I have been waiting for them to hit Priest Rapids Dam. In the middle of September we usually have a good idea of how many steelhead will be heading for the upper Columbia and if we will have seasons on the Methow River, and quite possibly this year, the Wenatchee.
