Looks like summer is going end with a good positive bang weather wise. That just means that we can all enjoy the late summer and early fall fishing under sunny skies. There are tons of great opportunities out there, too. The small streams are still an excellent option, and one I will continue to take advantage of as often as possible. I am going to shift some of my time now to fishing for summer-runs, particularly below Wells Dam. This seems to be prime time for me. I like to back-toll bait-wrapped plugs a ways below the dam and I have had very good success. This is when I really stock my freezer with smoker fodder. Another place I like to start trying this time of year is the area known as “Pelican” which is just around the corner upriver from the mouth of the Okanogan. Fish can start stacking up in this stretch in very good numbers and can offer excellent fishing, particularly in the morning. I will be bouncing around on the upper Columbia and maybe even below Priest Rapids a time or two until the steelhead season get rolling. Given the numbers we’re seeing, it could be a dandy.
