In some of my reports on fishing at Rufus Woods Reservoir, I have mentioned that there is some good perch fishing that can be had at times. This is true, but perch can be elusive. Some days you can find them and others, well good luck. One of the spots that Joe Heinlen refers to often is near Brandt’s landing, which is about six miles up from the boat launch on the east side of the reservoir. There are times when anglers can actually catch them here casting from shore. Most of the perch are taken by boaters that have the ability to do some search-and-destroy style fishing. One of the methods that some boating anglers employ is to troll with one eye on the depth sounder. When they pass over a bunch of perch it is pretty obvious. They will then quickly toss a marker over the side and them go back to the spot and start casting perch rigs. Last time I was at Rufus there were so many around in one spot that I could actually see them feeding on the surface in the weed beds. A good mess of perch is a delight any time of year, and you may be able to put one together in the winter at Rufus Woods.
