For FishingMagician.com I'm Eric Granstrom. So Wednesday was National Tater Tot Day. I'm not sure about you, but when I do a fish fry, I like to throw in some french fries or tater tots as well. I learned a lot about tots yesterday. Did you know that Tater Tots are known as Tasti-Taters in Canada? In New Zealand, they're called Hash Bites. In Australia, ask for Potato Gems or Potato Royals if you want Tater Tots. The tasty, fried, shredded spuds were invented by F. Nephi Grigg in 1953. They were called the Golden Grigg back then but I'm not sure why they're not still called that today. Tater Tots hit stores in 1956 and the Ore-Ida trademarked the Tater Tot name. Americans eat 70-million pounds of Tater Tots each year. So inspired with National Tater Tot Day, I went home yesterday afternoon and tried to make some homemade Tater Tots. I searched the web and watched some others do it and figured it would be easy. Not so much. I had the oil too hot for the first batch and my potato balls weren't very tight, so they looked like throwing stars. I'll leave it to Ore-Ida. Until next time, Good Fishing!
