By Dave Graybill

On Monday my fishing buddy Rollie Schmitten and I jumped aboard Kevin van Bueren’s raft, and floated the Methow River. Kevin’s guide service, North Cascades Fly Fishing is busy with summer trips. Years ago Rollie and I had done a steelhead trip with Kevin and he invited us to try the trout fishing, when we could enjoy warm weather and not the freezing conditions of a steelhead trip. We put in just above Twisp, rather than float through the Carlton Fire area, in case there was still fire fighting activity. Rollie and were thrilled as we had never floated this section of the Methow. Kevin had told us that the river was full of steelhead smolt, small rainbow and cutthroat this time of year. We may even get a shot at a really nice cutthroat. Rollie spent most of the day in the front of the raft casting a Stone Fly with a small nymph dropper, and took the back seat and tried large dry flies with a nymph dropper. Rollie and I tried estimate the number fish we caught and released and it was over 50! We didn’t land anything big, but were busy all day and had a ton of fun!
